Joe Loschiavo Memorial Cup

Tournament Overview

The structure for the CCHL’s end-of-the-season Joe Loschiavo Memorial Cup (JLMC) tournament is an all-inclusive, 3-game-guaranteed, jamboree style event. All 85 teams are included. The tournament is being conducted over a two-weekend period at several locations concurrent with rink availability. Weekends for play in the JLMC are the last weekend in February and the first weekend in March. Regular-season schedules, ice availability and division sizes dictate which age groups play on which weekends.

For efficient and effective tournament operations the CCHL prefers the JLMC tournament be held at host rinks with two sheets of ice. Ideally, host rinks are able to schedule and conduct the games of two divisions per rink per weekend. For 2023 we will be utilizing the ice facilities of six (6) regional area rinks; each rink hosts one or more CCHL hockey clubs for the regular season. CCHL clubs that are “home” at one of the rinks will be assigned responsibility to ensure tournament conduct at that rink. Additionally, the CCHL will designate at each site a ”Marshall” who will exercise tournament management authority

Each tournament Division will play all of their games at a single rink.  Assignment to a particular rink is contingent upon the individual rink’s ability to host either one or two divisions and the size (6 or 8 teams) of the individual divisions to be accommodated.

In alphabetic order by location, the 2023 JLMC participating rinks are:

Abingdon,  MD.   Ice World

Alexandria, VA.   The St. James

Frederick, MD.    Skate Frederick

Haymarket, VA    Haymarket Iceplex

Laurel, MD        The Gardens Ice House

Odenton, MD    Piney Orchard Ice Area

For the 2023 JLMC tournament the 10U Divisions will hold their tournament on February 24 and 25.  All other age groups  (12U, 14U, 18U) Divisions will hold their tournaments on March 4 and 5.

Seeding and Divisional Placement

The CCHL is using our traditional seeding method for teams for the 2023  JLMC tournament.  Each age group is seeded individually.

The Conferences (North and South) are seeded using points totals and, when necessary, enumerated tie-breakers, to determine final Conference standings. For Divisional placements for the JLMC, the Conferences are combined and then divided into multiple divisions of not more than eight teams each.  The top 3 teams in each conference are placed into Division 1.  The bottom 3 teams in each conference are placed into Division 3 (or Division 4 for age groups with greater than 23 teams).  The remaining teams are placed in either Divisions 2 or 3 according to their standings and the number of teams.  There may be situations in conferences with greater than 18, but less than 22 teams per age group where Divisions 2 and 3 may contain 7 or 8 teams each.

Dedication of the Tournament

Beloved coach and leader: Joe Loschiavo
Beloved coach and leader: Joe Loschiavo

In 2018, our hockey community lost one of its great ones. Joe Loschiavo served as the Capitol Corridor Hockey League Chairman for many years and contributed greatly to our community as a beloved coach and leader. The void left by Joe will be felt by hundreds of players and families who had the pleasure of learning from him—and from his colleagues who worked beside him within our sport and his various commitments. Joe’s lasting impact continues to live on through the growth of the players as individuals and athletes.

We at the CCHL will be forever grateful to Joe for his leadership and guidance in the growth of our league. In an effort to keep Joe’s spirit and leadership soaring in all of us for years to come, the CCHL proudly rededicates its playoff tournament as the Joe Loschiavo Memorial Cup.
